In honor of earth day, my little seed
Ok, hand up high if you do something to celebrate Earth Day!
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller…Bueller?
My hand is halfway up. I confess. We don’t do something specific to celebrate Earth Day. I like the idea of having an Earth Day tradition, though. My son and I will be helping with a local event near home this weekend to honor Earth Day; composting and picking up litter downtown.
In our family, we try to do “Earthy” life all the time. And what I mean by that is making an effort constantly to be responsible for the messes we make, and cleaning up after ourselves as we go, conserving energy and water, talking about caring for the Earth because it is a gift from God. Taking a trash bag with us when we go for walks around our neighborhood is common practice, and my kids take it very seriously. They are trash-picking kids.
Because it is Earth Week, and because I need to take the plunge and step out there, I am finally launching this blog. Count this as the little seed I am planting this year in honor of the upcoming Earth Day.*
What can you do this week to honor Earth Day? I’ll be giving some of my ideas this week. What are yours?
*Thanks to OnceAMonthMom for the push.

Ha!
Great idea to bring a trash bag on your walks! We routinely pick up trash on ours too, but I always end up trying to hold it all in my hand. Such a simple solution, but it never occurred to me. We are starting our first raised bed garden on Earth Day and getting ready for it this week by hunting for wood we can reclaim for the project.
Glad to see you’ve joined the natural parent blogging world. I look forward to following along with you!
Thanks, Justine! I’m following you now, too! Anxious to dig into your blog
My family too, tries to be “Earthy” daily. This year I want to do something special for Earth Day and I hope to make it a tradition. In honor of Earth Day this year my daughter and I will plant “something” in an old metal trashcan I’m re-purposing into a planter. We just haven’t decided what to plant yet. I also have big plans for us to decorate our plain reusable shopping bags and to use them EVERY shopping trip. Currently, more times than not I forget they’re in the trunk until I’m checking out. Maybe if we have a few “new” ones I’ll remember them….or my daughter will be excited to use them and will remind me
I look forward to reading your ideas this week and following your blog.
Best wishes!
Thanks, Sarah. Love your idea to decorate your bags with your daughter
Glad to have you here!
Found you via Tricia! Congrats on starting your blog!
Thanks, Kim!
Yay!!! I LOVE your blog!!! And that is a GREAT idea to take along a bag to pick up trash on walks. I will start doing that with my girls now. As you know, I am not much of a “green” person, but I’m hoping to find some ways to change that while following your blog
Yay! Thanks for reading today–I hope you’re feeling better soon, FFM
Can’t wait to see what you have in store! As a family, we haven’t done too many things for Earth Day by itself but we try to instill the ideas of reducing waste to our children, 4 & 19 months. I haven’t bought paper towels for our home in over a year and the kids know where the towel drawer is for spills. lol. My 19-month old is an ocd cleaner already so it’s useful. We also make our own natural dishwasher soap and run a load only when it’s absolutely packed. Another thing we do when grocery shopping is get paper bags and on craft days, we take out the bottoms of them and paint or stamp on the back to use as wrapping paper for gifts. The kids love it and I do too because we get to reuse the paper bags and the recipient gets a hand-made work of art via my little monsters. lol
Love it, May. I can relate! Thanks for reading!
LOVE your new blog! I can’t wait for more to come!:) Congrats on getting it launched! I need to remember to take a trash bag when we go on walks and to the park! We’ve never done anything to celebrate Earth Day before but in keeping with my 2012 New Year’s Resolution to try to be more “green,” we are going to have to do something this year! I’m thinking of making wind chimes with my girls using items from our recycling bin, my stash of things to reuse, items lying around the house not being used, etc. We also just picked up some seeds for our vegetable garden and flower beds so we will probably be planting those.
Thanks, Al! I love the idea to make windchimes!
Every day should be Earth Day!!
So true!
